To my crabbing friends in NJ, DE, VA, NC, SC, GA: As I travel around the country, I get a lot of questions as to the legality of using my crab from state to state. My Little Foot, Big Foot and Big Gun traps are Collapsible crab traps (not crab “pots”). A “pot” is a commercial type of crab trap with funnels on the sides that the crabs can enter into and CANNOT escape. A collapsible crab trap (like mine) allows the crabs to leave anytime they choose and the only way you catch what’s eating in the traps is when you pull up on the main line. The best definition of the traps I found was on the bluecrab.info under collapsible crab traps in NC but applies to all states. A NCDNR officer said as long as the traps are collapsible you are “chicken necking,” and if you are chicken necking you can run as many lines or traps as you want AS LONG AS THEY OPEN UP WHEN THEY HIT THE BOTTOM.

Warning: Its been brought to my attention at the fishing shows that "Chinese" plastic fish baskets are flooding the market this product is just like about everything else made in China, it looks good on the outside but doesn't last. They cut corners in the production process and don't add the UV blockers needed to make them cheaper.
So when you take them out in the direct sunlight (like crabbing) the plastic begins to break down and the plastic cracks rather quickly. Some fellow crabbers told me that they didn't even last them a year. The way to tell is to flip them over and look where they are made.
The good quality baskets are made in Canada. So just remember what your mother told you: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
